Man charged in connection with Kingswood cannabis factory

Officers from Surrey Police have charged a man after a substantial cannabis factory was found operating in Kingswood.

Police were called to Alcocks Lane, Kingswood, on Thursday, 1 July, after an electrician, who was working on a neighbouring property, spotted the circuit board was melting due to excessive use.

The large detached house was drawing its power from the neighbouring address and when officers entered the premises they discovered more than 420 cannabis plants being cultivated in every room.

Investigating officer PC Helen Wicking said: "The occupant of the neighbouring property called in the electrical engineers after they smelled burning. The strain put on the circuit board undoubtedly could have resulted in fatal consequences had the engineer not raised the alarm when he did.

"Upon examination of the property it was clear a full scale cannabis factory was in operation cultivating more than 420 plants using a hydroponics system. Many rooms in the large detached house were completely filled with cannabis plants all of which were various stages of maturity. This was a sophisticated cannabis factory and the plants we have recovered have an estimated street value in excess of £80,000.

"Drugs misuse is a community problem and I would urge anyone who has any suspicions about illegal drugs supply to always come forward and speak with an officer.

"Cultivation of cannabis is a criminal offence and Surrey Police will not tolerate the sale and supply of illegal drugs. I would appeal to members of the community to remain vigilant to help us in the fight against the illegal supply of drugs. With your help we can continue to crackdown on cannabis factories and those who profit from supplying illegal drugs."

Cai Lin, 28, of Alcocks Lane, Kingswood, appeared at South East Surrey Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 9 July, charged with producing controlled drugs namely class B cannabis. Lin was remanded in custody to appear at Crown Court at a later date.
