Light in the Darkness
Although Jesus was probably not born on December 25^th, for his actual
birth date is lost in the mists of time, the Church wisely placed the
celebration of his birth at the time of deepest darkness, around the time of
the northern winter solstice. As a consequence the hours of light gradually
grow longer in the days following Christmas.
A major theme of the birth story is that light suddenly shines in the
darkness, resonating not only with Hebrew Old Testament texts but also
across many gentile cultures. Darkness is associated with blindness, night
,
sleep, cold, gloom, despair, being lost, chaos, death, danger and a yearni
ng
for the dawn. It is a striking image of the human condition. Light is seen
as its antidote and is thus an image of salvation. In the light, one is
awake, able to see and find one's way; it is associated with relief and
rejoicing that the night is over; in the light one is safe and warm. In th
e
light there is life.
The Hebrew message, The people who walked in darkness have seen a
great
light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness -
shined has been seen by Christians, from Biblical times ever sinc
e, to
refer to Jesus who is the light shining in the darkness. John's Gospel mak
es
the affirmation: "The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming in
to
the world." Jesus isthe light who brings enlightenment; indeed, he is "the
light of the world."
During the first century AD the Caesars also claimed similar titles for
themselves, commanding all subjects of the Roman Empire to worship them as
god. In an inscription from 9 AD found in Asia Minor, Caesar is spoken of
as
"our God" and as a "savour" who brought "peace" throughout the earth, and
whose birth was "good news" to the world. In other texts, he is also spoke
n
of as divine and as descended from a divine/human conception. By echoing
language used about the Roman emperor, the Bible affirms that it is Jesus,
not Caesar, is the Good News, the true Saviour and Son of God who brings
peace. His kingship is one of gentle but firm justice and peace. The first
readers of the Christmas story had to decide, which Lord, Caesar or Jesus,
should they follow?
Today we too have a similar decision to make. The truly important question
s
about the birth stories are, "Is Jesus the light of the world? Is he the
true Lord? Is what happened in him 'of God'?" Answering these questions la
ys
claim to our whole lives. His name Immanuel means God with us so we can
also interpret the virgin birth as something that happens within us
That is, the story of the Virgin Birth can also be seen as the story of
Christ being born within us today, through the union of the Spirit of God
with our flesh. Ultimately, the story of Jesus' birth is not just about th
e
past, but also about his internal birth in us in the present. That is it
raises the question; Are we going to let his light on us and i
n us? Are
we going to give our lives into the hand of Almighty God and thereby adopt
his passionate concern for justice, peace and righteousness in the world -
his creation?
I wish you a very Happy and Peaceful Christmas
and look forward to welcoming you to our Christmas Services.
